DIY: Electrical Outlets

Updating your electrical outlets can be really daunting but if you read the directions and take safety precautions, you can have a successful project.  Make sure you start by turning off the power at your panel.

Remove the surrounding cover and the old outlet.  Take care to notice which wires are which.  Each outlet can be different so refer to the directions that come with your new outlet.

Attach your wires to your new outlet.

Put on the surrounding plate and test by plugging in a lamp.

So much better!

  1. Some heavy-duty appliances, like a clothes dryer or cooking range, or power tools require a 125V/250V receptacle, which has a special prong configuration.
